I am writing a story for children (ages about 8 to 14 years) which takes place in the 1920s, in the years 1408 to about 1412, and from the early 1990s to the present day.

One fact I need is: I know the City of Helsinki was founded by Gustav Vasa in 1550, but was there a settlement there in the early 1400s? and if so, was it then called Helsinki or something else?

I would be most grateful if you could answer this question for me. Best Regards, XXXXXX

Answer

By the time when Helsinki was founded, the area was inhabited by Swedish speaking peasants. Helsinki, or Helsingfors as the name is in Swedish, was founded at the location of a hamlet called Forsby (Swedish name), nowadays known also by its Finnish name Koskela as a neighbourhood of the town.
