I leafed through books, old and new, about Christmas decorations and about paper craft in general. The only description of the “Finnish star” I could find was in an English book, namely “Home made Christmas” by Tessa Evelegh (Cico Books 2009). In this book, the star is called simply “white paper star”. The author writes: “Try making this easy-to-make yet charming tree-top decoration based around the traditional Scandinavian papercrafts... “ (p. 58). There really is an old Scandinavian...29.3.2012 12:56Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

I offer my sincere apologies for this reply is long overdue. Unfortunately, even after lengthy information search I wasn’t able to find the exact method Frida Kahlo used to prepare the paintings she made on copper. However, I was able to find plenty of advices for artists wishing to paint oil on copper (see below). Although Kahlo didn’t have the opportunity the use some of the modern substances, I would guess that her technique couldn’t dramatically differ from the modern methods. But the...13.4.2006 12:14Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

It seems that you can't find "Androgilia" in Latin (or any other language) in any Finnish library, unfortunately! You can, however, request an interlibrary loan from another country, if you wish. Here is information on fees and on how to do it http://www.lib.hel.fi/en-GB/kaukopalvelu/ . On the other hand, are you sure that Ammonius Saccas actually wrote "Androgilia"? The article on him in Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammonius_Saccas does not confirm his authorship. Hello! You are right. The local government office of Padasjoki informed us that a branch of the Finnish 4H federation used to run a summer cafe at Enni Id's cabin, but the place has been closed for two summers. However, it should be possible to visit Enni Id's cabin, if you contact the head of recreational services in Padasjoki, tel. 0400 713 303. They'll do their best to help you. Our readers may wonder who Enni Id is. Samples of her work: http://www.phmuseomatka.fi/main.php?id=217 (...22.8.2010 21:56Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

Eljon Liebkind, whose stage name was Johnny, was a popular singer in Finland in the 60s. His first big hit was a song called "Hymyhuulet" (released in 1963), a Finnish cover version of Cliff Richards hit "Lucky Lips". His career began to fade when the 60s came to a close. In 1969 he toured Finland with the headline "Villi vallankumous" which translates as "Wild Revolution". It was a package concert tour with different artists. Frankies was Johnny’s backing group. Kristina Hautala was also a...22.1.2011 23:51Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

I would like to have information about Carelia district, the Finnish Carelia.
Your question is quite extensive to answer in few words. As you might be aware is Finnish Karelia divided into two sections; South and North Karelia. Here you may explore some web pages of them: http://www.pohjois-karjala.fi/Resource.phx/maakuntaliitto/english/index.htx http://www.ekarjala.com/ http://www.jns.fi/Resource.phx/sivut/sivut-jns/index.htx http://virtual.finland.fi/netcomm/news/showarticle.asp?intNWSAID=33096...28.11.2005 14:18

Could you tell me which libraries in Helsinki have books in English?
Books in English can be found in the majority of the public libraries in Helsinki, although some smaller libraries naturally carry smaller collections. The Rikhardinkatu library has a special British Collection, which includes e.g. English fiction and the history of English literature. Rikhardinkatu library's contact information: http://www.helmet.fi/en-US/Libraries_and_services/Rikhardinkatu_Library The main library in Pasila has a big collection of foreign language books, both for...26.1.2007 12:43Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

One of the newest titles translated into English is ”Purge” by Sofi Oksanen, which I recommend warmly. http://www.economist.com/blogs/easternapproaches/2010/07/essential_reading_sofi_oksanens_purge The Finnish Institute in London has compiled the following list of recent translations of Finnish literature. It comes with descriptions of the books and some background information of the authors. I hope it helps you at least a little. http://www.finnish-institute.org.uk/en/arts-and-culture/...8.8.2010 17:53

The manuscript is almost certainly a Roman Catholic gradual book. It is highly unlikely that it is from the Graduale Aboense. I think you should show the manuscript to the faculty of music of your nearest university. I think the representatives of your nearest catholic church might also be able to tell more about your manuscript. Links: http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graduale_Aboense28.4.2012 22:23

Our database "Modern Finnish Writers" is one of the best English sources on Finnish writers, but unfortunately the database is not working properly at the moment. The linking is not working and the English site has all the information in Finnish. We are trying to solve the problem as soon as possible. http://www.finnishwriters.fi/ Another good source is Books from Finland. Their website is full of information about modern Finnish literature.
