The best starting point could be National Defence Univercity Library. You can put a question Ask a Librarian Service and address (menu bar) it to National Defence Univercity Library. http://www.libraries.fi/en-GB/ask_librarian12.8.2010 13:51Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

You should start with this website. (It is in Finnish, though, so you need someone to translate it.) In a nut shell, you can fill out the form on the bottom of the page and thus apply for a 4 week bartending course here in Helsinki. The language of the course is Finnish. http://www.studentum.fi/Baarimestarikoulutus_Helsingissae_113044.htm28.12.2010 01:01Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

Hi. Here are some quotes from the report, "Can a child be home alone" "Finnish law does not define when a child can be left alone at home. Child Welfare Act, the authorities have to intervene when a child neglect endangers the child's development." "International recommendations England National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty Thurs Children (NSPCC) recommends that children under 12 years of age should never be left alone, and not less than 16 years of age should be left alone at...27.12.2010 15:09

Hi, How a switch is changed for a tram to get the right direction?
The tram driver turns a switch that controls a magnet underneath the tram. The magnet in its turn controls a relay between the rails. The system is described in detail on this page http://www.raitio.org/historia/vaihteet/kaanto.htm but unfortunately only in Finnish. However, there is also a diagram, which probably gives you an idea of how the system works. Please check also the English pages of the Finnish Tramway Society: http://www.raitio.org/english/index.htm18.11.2010 13:08Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

To start with, I apologize for the answering being overdue. As you alraedy have talked to your lawyer friend, I suppose you are not asking for legal advice but rather for an opinion, what the Finnish common sense would say about your problem. You may understand that this answer is the opinion of one person, though I can add that for years I have been member of my house comittee, so I have some understanding in these matters. Your argument about seniority is valid, but not very strong. There...17.11.2010 11:43Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

Dear questioner, Thank you for your question. English is spoken so widely and in so many various ways through the world that it is possible to say that there are several different English languages. Nigerian English is just one member in a large family of many different English languages. Irish English, Caribbean English, South African English and Indian English can also cause problems for people who are used to listen only to British, American or International English. But they are still...7.11.2010 14:20Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

The English translation of ”Maamme” can be found at http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Our_Land_(Runeberg). The translator is Anna Krook (1850–1926). “Our Land” is in public domain, so it can be used without any copyright limits.31.10.2010 13:26Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

Your question concerning the yachting competitions of the 1936 Olympic Games was referred to us at the Sports Library of Finland. Unfortunately, there are no records of any incident between Finnish and Swedish yachtsmen during the Olympic Regatta in Kiel 1936 in the archives of the Finnish Olympic Committee, the Official Report of the Games or in the Finnish or Swedish sports press at our disposal. However, the official results do show that both the Finnish and Swedish boats were disqualified...29.9.2010 20:36Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

Could you tell me the etymology of the word Tsemppiä, Thanks very much.
'Tsemppiä' or its basic form 'tsemppi'(a will to fight)is a colloquial expression which can be found in modern Finnish dictionaries. 'Tsemppi' (noun) or 'tsempata' (verb) comes from the Swedish verb kämpa = fight, strive, cope.22.9.2010 03:01Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

Hello. Here are some fruit dryers that have been sold in Finland: ABC, OBH Nordica, Jabloko, Evermat, Orakas ja Sopu. You can ask for these from the department stores around the country. http://www.kuluttaja.fi/Page/9a37b23f-7410-474c-9e4c-244f003607ba.aspx (in Finnish) http://www.google.com/search?hl=fi&rls=com.microsoft%3Afi&q=tavaratalot+suomi&aq=5&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=tavaratalot+&gs_rfai=20.9.2010 13:59

Given that Finland for centuries has contained far more people named Helenius...
During the 16th and 17th century, many academic Finns added “-ius” to their name so that their name would look like more Latin and therefore more “elegant”. The Historical Church Register (http://hiski.genealogia.fi/hiski?fi) tells us that there were a lot of persons named Helenius but only two persons named Helinius, so I think “Helen” (or the common form “Helén”) wasn’t formed by shortening “Helenius”. Of course, “Helin” and “Helén” were also used alongside with “Helenius”; everyone didn’t...9.9.2010 20:10Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

The National Defence University´s Library answered to your question and gave a list of references below. Most of the source books on the subject are available only in Finnish. However, in Kari Kuusela´s book there is a short chapter in English about German Assault Gun Brigade seconded to the Finnish Army during the Battle of Tali-Ihantala. I hope you find these books useful! Käkelä, Erkki. Laguksen rynnäkkötykit : rynnäkkötykkipataljoona 1943-1944 / Erkki Käkelä. Porvoo ; WSOY, 1996. ISBN...24.8.2010 12:50Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

Hello! You are right. The local government office of Padasjoki informed us that a branch of the Finnish 4H federation used to run a summer cafe at Enni Id's cabin, but the place has been closed for two summers. However, it should be possible to visit Enni Id's cabin, if you contact the head of recreational services in Padasjoki, tel. 0400 713 303. They'll do their best to help you. Our readers may wonder who Enni Id is. Samples of her work: http://www.phmuseomatka.fi/main.php?id=217 (...22.8.2010 21:56Helsingin kaupunginkirjasto

I would like to read some modern fiction from Finland.
One of the newest titles translated into English is ”Purge” by Sofi Oksanen, which I recommend warmly. http://www.economist.com/blogs/easternapproaches/2010/07/essential_reading_sofi_oksanens_purge The Finnish Institute in London has compiled the following list of recent translations of Finnish literature. It comes with descriptions of the books and some background information of the authors. I hope it helps you at least a little. http://www.finnish-institute.org.uk/en/arts-and-culture/...8.8.2010 17:53

There are at least some internet-pages, where it is possible to learn Finnish language online. Here are two pages, where teaching language is English: www.finnishschool.com and http://donnerwetter.kielikeskus.helsinki.fi/finnishforforeigners. Also on YLE’s (Finnish Broadcasting Company) internetpage you can find material for studying Finnish language.
